cul·ture ˈkəlCHər noun 1. the way of life of a particular people, especially as shown in their ordinary behavior and habits, their attitudes toward each other, and their moral and religious beliefs. Culture Culture shapes people and influences their values, fears, humor, hopes and loyalties. According to Brown University, “Culture is central to learning. It plays a role not only in communicating and receiving information, but also in shaping the thinking process of groups and individuals.” Culture is central to community, creating a common bond between its members. Culture is the factor that has the power to shape every and any person’s life and their way of thinking. It affects everyone in ways you can see, and behind the scenes. This is meant to promote one’s harmony with their environment and promote good fortune, as it is believed. This idea was derived from Taoism. Here is one tool to promote this “harmony” in which you tap the bowl with wooden handle and then swirl the edges to resonate the sound. -Kieran Tay The Korean Table Shown above is a typical everyday Korean meal. The side dishes are called ‘banchan’ and are served in small dishes, shared by everyone at the table. They are served with a bowl of white rice and soup. The side dishes and rice are eaten with the chopsticks, and spoons are usually only used with soup. -Ashley Kim The Arts Art is an essential and fundamental aspect of everyday life. Not only is it beautiful, involvement in art and creativity has been proven to develop powerful workforce skills in children and “relive isolation and promote identity formation and intercultural understanding” in adults (Ontario). An individual’s culture heightens the opportunities for involvement with art while studying their cultural inheritance. In Canada and in the United Kingdom, the importance of culture to mental and physical health is being recognized and integrated into healthcare. -Ashley Kim Hindu Home Temples This is a picture of an at home temple. These objects are religious in Hinduism and are representations of Hindu deities. -Raunit Kohli The OM In Hinduism, the OM represents peace and the creation of everything in the universe. -Radhika Patel The French Flag The modern French flag was adopted in 1794. The three colors of the French flag, red, white and blue, represent liberty, equality and fraternity, ideas from the French Revolution. Blue and red also represent Paris. The South Korean Flag This is the Korean flag, called the Taegukki. Each image incorporated into the flag represents something, such as Heaven, Fire, Earth and Water.
